"His First Flight'

His first Flight is the Story of a Seagull Written by Liam O'Flaherty .Liam O'Flaherty (1896-1984) was an Irish novelist and a short story writer. His works are noted for their psychological insight into life's problems and the ways of overcoming them. His First Flight relates the importance of independence and self- confidence, as well as the need to remain involoved in family life. 

It is a story of a young seagull who was afraid to fly. The young seagull was alone on his ledge for 24 hours. His two brothers and his sister and parents had already flown away. He was afraid of flying. He thought that his wings would not support him. He failed to gather the courage to fly. His parents threatened to starve him. The young seagull became very hungry. There was not a single scrap of food left in his ledge. He started to eat the eggshells from which he and his brothers and sister hatched out.

It was like eating a part of himself. The young seagull played many tricks to attract the attention of his parents. But they did not pay any attention to him. Suddenly, his mother picked up a piece of fish in her beak and flew across to him. She stood still just in front of him. The piece of fish in her beak was almost within the reach of his beak. The young seagull was mad with hunger. He dived at the fish. At the same time his mother Swooped upwards. The next moment he found himself falling outwards and downwards into space. And he started to fly. Thus the young seagull made his first flight.

I believe that to achieve something you must try. Fear would be there but it is within ourselves. Once you overcome fear you will see wonders. To fail is not a crime but failing to try is a crime as it stops us from attaining our goal.

The story conveys multiple messages. First, it reveals the bitter side of being a coward. We see how the little bird gets isolated due to fear. The story shows how actions are needed according to necessities . Only those who are willing to face challenges can succeed in life. The experience of the young bird conveys the importance of confidence and self-esteem. 

His First flight highlights the impotence of independence ,self belief and Confidence because it motivate us attaining goals .Concluding this review let us remember that 'Necessity is Always the Mother of Invention'
